Demolition
When a demolition permit is posted on the job worksite, work can begin.
Right next to the permit should be a copy of your scope of work. Questions about
what to do can typically be answered by this collection of details.
Demolition should not begin until there is a person on the jobsite who knows
and understands the scope of work to be completed. A checklist should be made to
stipulate a sequence of tasks to be completed. One aspect should be completed
before the next one is begun. All material removed from the structure should be placed
in a dumpster or debris truck to reduce material handling as much as possible,
During demolition, no component of heating, air conditioning, plumbing, or
electrical should be removed without approval of the respective trade
contractor. Fixtures and trims can be removed if they are to be replaced. But no
pipes, wires or ducts should be removed without prior approval from the respective
tradesmen.
When a structural component like a post or beam is to be removed or
relocated, the rough carpenter should be present to establish an order of
operation. There may be a need to install a temporary support somewhere before
existing posts and beams are removed. Aside from damage to the structure if done
improperly, there could exist a danger to workers if a ceiling or floor were to collapse.
