Write Specifications
This is where you use the Scope Of Work to specify color, size, type, brand,
source, measurements, locations, patterns, anything that will be a question for
a contractor. The idea is that with this list of specifications, anyone on the
face of the earth that can read will be able to do the work just like you want
it done.
Many times customers of contractors expect the contractor to be a mind
reader. This rarely works. Contractors will do the job correctly based on what
they think should be done when no specifications are provided. So rather than
get a ton of phone calls requesting clarification, or a meeting, why not list
all the specifics that you know about before the work begins. This will reduce
costs associated with "EXTRAS". You do not want extras. You have not
planned for the extra cost. You have not planned for the extra time it will take
to complete the extras. Extras are not good.
Sure, there will be details you have not specified which will result in a
ton of phone calls, no matter what you do. But if you have thought through the
job, there will be fewer specifications to determine as the job progresses.
